ISS-Oeiras - International Sharing School

ISS houses

Our house system inspires a sense of belonging and school pride by fostering connections, friendship and teamwork between students from different grades.

The house system explained

Every student at ISS Lisbon is a member of one of four houses, which they represent in house competitions for academics, sports and creative endeavours. Through these events, children work together with students from other grades towards a common goal and share in successes or disappointments.

At each event, children earn points through their achievements and engagement. The year typically culminates in a celebration for the winning house, recognising their collective efforts.

The house system is designed to promote:

Friendly competition

Inter-house events promote healthy rivalry, encouraging students to strive for excellence in academics, sports, and arts. This motivates participation while emphasising teamwork and the importance of fair play for the students.

Community

Houses create a sense of belonging by grouping students across different grades. As an international school with many nationalities, our house events help break down barriers, ensuring everyone feels part of a community.

Leadership

Students can take on leadership roles such as house prefects or event organisers. These roles teach responsibility and an entrepreneurial mindset, improving decision-making skills and independence.

House prefects

Each year, houses name their prefects, providing additional opportunities for young people to further develop leadership skills. Prefects serve as role models and mentors for younger students in the house, helping new students settle into the school and integrate into the house community.

Prefects are also involved in organising events and ensuring all their house members cheer loudly at events to encourage their team!
